Serious A30 road crash near Launceston

WHAT is being described as a ‘serious’ accident has left both west and eastbound carriages of the A30 closed at Five Lanes, near Launceston.

The accident happened shortly after 5pm today; police are advising motorists to avoid the area.

A tractor towing a trailer and a car were involved in the collision on the westbound carriageway just past the Altarnun and Five Lanes junction.

The tractor and trailer both overturned and the male driver of the tractor was taken to Derriford hospital by ambulance.

A spokesman for the police said that emergency services are still at the scene.

Diversions are in place and long queues are building up as vehicles are being reversed by the police back up the road to the nearest junction.

* 9pm update: No further details have been released but a police spokesman said that the A30 at Five Lanes remains closed.

Obviously hope injuries not too serious. I left Exeter (work related) around 5:15pm to go back home to Bodmin. Hit the traffic jam a few miles east of Five Lanes around 6:00pm, didn't get to Five Lanes till about 7:00pm. Road closed at Five Lanes turnoff. Only saw one policeman at Five Lanes turnoff (condem cutbacks?), I felt emergency planning in relation to redirections/diversions could have been better (there weren't any - casualty of condem cutbacks?). It was pure chaos, I don't know how others continued their journeys west. I ended going into Altarnun, going back east up A30 to Callington turnoff, took road to Upton Cross, to Minions, then A38 to Bodmin. I got back home at 8:15pm.
